Bank Fee Horror Stories

There's no shortage of anecdotes about banks hitting their customers with odd fees. For example, many banks offer free checking accounts for customers who use direct deposit. One teacher says that her bank gives her fee-free checking during the months her salary is direct deposited—but because she gets paid only ten months of the year (she's a teacher, remember), her bank charges her fees on the two months when there is no direct deposit.

Check out these and other bank account fee horror stories in a discussion at an ING Direct blog post.

A bank manager in Indiana also chimes in:

I gotta hand it to all of you who are "crying" about all the fees you are getting hit with. I am a bank manager and hear all of these stories daily regarding fees. The "woe is me" attitude does not land you any pity on my plate. Remember, from a bank's perspective, we MUST act evenly to people regarding fees. I can't waive a fee for you and then decline another for the same reason.

The arrogance of this bank manager is staggering. Of course you can waive fees for one and not another, you twit. Banks do it all the time. But no one is asking you to do that. People are asking financial entities to do business built on ethics.

The manipulation of the financial system before the first of the consumer protection laws go into effect in a few months, sleazy fine-print provisions instituted in the frenzied final weeks, changing the rules of the games during play, user fees that are nibbling people to death, practices that took down the international financial system, and usury-level finance charges - thank you for reminding us that banks have to treat everyone evenly.

Methinks, however, that you are using "fair treatment" and "equal treatment" as synonyms. They are not.

btw, do you work for, or is your bank related to, one of the financial entities that we bailed out? Which would mean you are skewering the people who saved your woe-is-me butt - and your job - when banks and investment firms were crying for pity on our plates.

Maybe you'll check in later with your name and identify the bank you work for. Inquiring minds would love to know.
