Discussion Point: What Do You Hate Most About Holiday Shopping Season?

Call it the war against Christmas lasting six months. The Scrooges and Grinches are surfacing early this year, mainly to complain that the winter holiday shopping hubbub is surfacing so early this year.

A recent Consumerist post asked readers about what bothered them most about holiday shopping season. The answers included the craziness and hype of Black Friday, unattractive women in ill-fitting elf costumes, Salvation Army bell ringers begging for charity, and Christmas music. But most of all, what people seem to hate is that we're already discussing holiday shopping season in full force—and it's still a few weeks before Halloween.

For that matter, many desperate retailers were already wishing shoppers a Merry Christmas in July.

Being Italian - with the ethnic password being "feed everyone" I have decided that this year that is enough of a gift! I am NOT going to go shopping, I will continue to make the stuffed breads and more. I do recognize that this is the most important aspect. The h--- with the other gifts! The truth of the matter is "what we do is much more important than what we "spend".

As a cheapskate, what I hate about the holiday shopping season is that the shopping season has killed the holiday - consumption activities have squeezed out the spirituality of Christmas for 99% of celebraters, and the warm glow we feel on Christmas day is the familiarity of tradition and the satiety of owning lots of new stuff.
Bah, humbug. Scrooge was right, he was just ahead of his time.
